Ron Currie is the author of four novels and one collection of short stories. He has won the New York Public Library’s Young Lions Award, the Addison M. Metcalf Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the American Library Association’s Alex Award, and the Pushcart Prize. His books have been translated into fifteen languages, and his short fiction and nonfiction have received recognition in Best American anthologies. As a screenwriter he worked most recently on the Apple TV+ series Extrapolations and has developed projects with AMC Studios, Amblin Television, and ITV America. He lives in Portland, Maine and teaches in the University of Southern Maine Stonecoast MFA program.

Joshua Chamberlain joined the Union Army and is best known for his gallantry at the Battle of Gettysburg, leading a bayonet charge, for which he was awarded the Medal of Honor. He was also given the honor of commanding the Union troops at the surrender ceremony for the infantry of Robert E. Lee’s Army at Appomattox Court House, Virginia.

October’s artist, Kirk Pantos, grew up in a Greek American family outside of Boston. The art of metalwork has been his love and curiosity since childhood. Pantos went to Harvard for an undergraduate degree in Art History, graduating in 1973, then moved to Montana, and enjoyed working with his hands in a variety of settings from Model A Restoration to silver and gold smithing. After a year in the Mediterranean exploring his roots, including the intricate metalworking traditions of Greece, Pantos found himself in New York City, again working with cars, this time in a Ferrari dealership. After moving back to the Boston area, he attended the Massachusetts College of Art where he received both his Teaching Certificate and Master’s in Art Education. Until his retirement in 2021, he taught studio fundamentals, ceramics, video, sculpture, and metal shop at Canton High School. Pantos now lives in mid-coast Maine where he is happily making metal sculpture full time.

Writers of all experience levels are encouraged to come together, write, share, and connect in a welcoming, supportive environment. We will meet the second Saturday of every month at 2:30 P.M.

Each session will focus on generative writing, using prompts and guided exercises designed to spark creativity and help participants generate new work. Writers are encouraged to share their work, in an environment that focuses on exploration and creativity rather than critique.

“This group is about creating a safe, creative space where people can show up, write, and share,” said Kristin Perpignano, the group’s facilitator. “Writers don’t need to prepare anything in advance—just bring something to write with and a willingness to experiment.”

The writing group is free to attend an open to the public, and reflects the library’s commitment to fostering creativity, literacy, and community connection.
